Palestinian Proposal of a Unilateral Declaration of Statehood - 2011
Israeli NarrativePalestine’s unilateral move to achieve statehood is a rejection of the peace process and an indication that Palestine does not value negotiating with Israel. As the US’s response demonstrates, Palestine’s unilateral move would violate international laws, would not be effective, and would only make problems worse. The only solution must come through direct negotiations between Israel and Palestine. To Israel, this declaration serves as yet another example of the Palestinan’s preference for extremism.

Palestinian NarrativeRepeated actions of hostility on the part of Israel, their continued development of settlements, ignoring of internationally agreed upon boundaries, and continuing breakdown of negotiations, caused Palestine to seek statehood unilaterally. As such, President Abbas applied to the UN for recognition as a state, just like any other nation. With decreasing faith in Israel’s intentions and the negotiation process, a unilateral move seemed necessary for progress.
